Inconnu: its possible => $pseudo = $userObject->preferred_username;
Inconnu: ?
Vali1234: hi, how can I turn an array into arguments for a function? Ex: foo($a,$b) {}, and I want to call it something like: foo($array); where $array has 2 elements. Can that be done in PHP?
@et: Vali1234: http://de3.php.net/call_user_func_array
Vali1234: cool, thanks, had call_user_func but didn't think of call_user_func_array :p
Mango: Hi. I run a small PHP/MySQL-driven website with approximately 100,000 page views per month.
Mango: I'm moving to VPS. Should I choose 768MB RAM or is 256/1GB burstable sufficient?
proton: vps as virual ... server?
Mango: Ya.
proton: virtual even
Mango: 1/2 is Joomla and the other 1/2 is Wordpress
proton: well, 100k is some, but the amount of resources is more depending on your site itself
proton: okay
proton: do you haev any idea about the memory consumption while running the contents?
Mango: Unfortunately no. Is there an easy way for me to track that? I have SSH on my current shared server but not root access.
proton: one of our customer is running dedicated wordpress with millions of hits per month with 1GB memory and zend server community edition with caches on
Mango: I definitely don't get millions of hits per month.
Mango: That'll be the day :)
Mango: 256 might do me then.
proton: yeap, but for comparison
Mango: Of course.
proton: i had a site that run with 128M and got 3M pageloads per month
Mango: Do you work for a VPS provider?
proton: kind of
proton: i just founded another company
Mango: Ya lookin' for new clients? I'd be delighted to put you in the pool :)
Mango: It's between Hostgator and InMotion at the moment
proton: my previous one does provide virtual servers also, but i'm going to provide private clouds later
Mango: Cool. (What's a cloud?)
Vali1234: hey, is there a function like get_class_methods, but that will return the methods of the extended classes also? (public ones only)
proton: well, that is quite open definition, but let's say that when talking about hosted services, those are provided from somewhere using larger infrastructures
proton: Mango: i'm quite sure that you'll find a provider closer to you that is more suitable than i would be
proton: Mango: i assume you are living somewhere in vancouver
proton: i do live in the other side of the ball (almost)
Mango: Ah. I am indeed just outside of Vancouver.
Mango: Fair enough - thanks for your honesty.
proton: no problem :)
Mango: :)
proton: Mango: but anyway, running dedicated environment gives much better possibility to control all of the system resources
Mango: Aye. That's what I'm hoping for.
proton: with regular hosting environments where every single resource is more or less shared with the other customers there might be some unwanted behaviors
proton: with bigger sites and webstores i'm always recommendineg dedicated environment
Mango: I think it's going to be HostGator. InMotion's CPU resources are shared.
Mango: HostGator gives me guaranteed CPU.
proton: well, in these days you cannot be sure of that anymore
proton: i prefer on scalable hosting environments
proton: lets say IBM Hurricane X4-architecture, which is NUMA-system
Mango: doesn't sound like something I could get for $50/month though :P
proton: there may me 16 CPUs with 4 cores each, 64 cores total and upto 1TB memory on a four node single server
proton: with those resources, i would run more than 400 virtual servers in single system
proton: so nobody is not getting dedicated cpu
Mango: These guys have two Nehalem CPUs
proton: it's likely 1/10th
Mango: 16 hyperthreaded cores
proton: shared to how many?
Mango: it doesn't say.
proton: i would run 40-50
proton: actual it depends the memory
proton: but if you are buying virtualized environment, don't trust a word about dedicated cpu
proton: i'm 99,999% sure it's bshit
proton: it doesn't matter, but don't have that one being the part you are gointg to make your decision
Mango: hrm, interesting
proton: current virtualization environments doesn't give a possibility good enough to set the CPU affinity for guest systems
proton: of course some control exists, scheduling etc.
Mango: well, these guys have a 45 day money-back guarantee
Mango: so I'll try 'em out. Worst case scenario I have to move again.
proton: but as you know (read that already from somewhere), usual server is consumpting about 7-10% CPU only
Mango: Aye.
proton: which means that using a virtualized environment with 1 CPU, it should be fine for ~13-14 VMs without having any sights of running out of power
proton: actually guest systems can be deployed much tighter
